Hope Church
Events

This Week's Announcements:

WHTC (1450 AM) broadcasts our worship service at 11 a.m. on Sundays.  Each worship service is recorded on CD.  A $2 donation is suggested. Please contact the church office if you would like a CD of a particular week.

Please pray for our RCA missionaries:  Dave, Char, and Grant Alexander in Taiwan; Rowland, Jane, Michelle, and Jennifer VanEs in Kenya; Caleb, Joanne, Elsa, Ezra, and Daisy Swart in Southern Ethiopia.

Prayers for Justice and Peace:   Pray for Amnesty International.  This is an agency that focuses on peace and justice.  Their mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, with the context of its work to promote all human rights.

Prayers for People of Faith: We invite your prayers for our brothers and sisters of the Presbyterian Church (USA), a closely allied denomination of the RCA.  More information can be found at www.pcusa.org

“ . . . a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ . . . “                                 1 Peter 1:3
Living Hope - it’s a compelling way to give thanks to God for our faith and for Hope Church. And at the same time it expresses who we are and what we’re about: we are a living hope. Shannon Jung’s book, Hunger and Happiness, and participate in a hands-on class on canning.

Kids Hope USA:  The Hope Church Kids Hope USA team fits together like the pieces of a puzzle; one child, one mentor, one prayer partner, one hour, one church, one school.  We need mentors, substitute mentors, and prayer partners.  Can you help supply the missing pieces?  For more information, please call Barb Joldersma(399-7319) or Judy VanderWilt (399-5438), or talk with Barb or Judy at the sign-up table in the Gathering Area.

Gardeners!  Please clean up and work on your section of the garden.  There are many things that need attention.  Students from Hope College will be working in the gardens on Saturday, Sept. 11, for a few hours of community service work, but there is much to be done!  If you have any questions on what needs to be done, contact David VanHeest.

CAH Update:  TODAY is the last day to contribute directly to the “Three Avenues of Caring” for both the Community Action House pantry and the Community Kitchen at Western Theological Seminary.  Look for a full report soon regarding the great impact this weekly and buy-in-large-amounts support has made in people’s lives.  A noticeable confirmation:  the 10# commercial cans of fruit and vegetables have been in steady use at the Community Kitchen recently – where over 200 people have been served every day (255 this past Monday!).  Thank you for the plastic and paper bags, and covered containers.  They are in constant need.

Diner’s Club:  A new sign up is occurring for participation in Diner’s Club.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it is a wonderful opportunity for fun and fellowship with members and friends of Hope Church.  Groups of eight meet for a social meal in someone’s home.  The dinner can be casual or dressy or ethnic or whatever you’d like!  There will be three dinners this year: October, January, and April.  Sign up in the Gathering Area in September!

Walk for WaterHelp increase the awareness of this global water crisis and provide safe water for thirsty people by joining together on
Saturday, September 25, at 9 a.m. in Kollen Park.  Ways for everyone to participate –

Sign up in the Gathering Area at the “Walk for Water” table.

Journey: The Earth Is the Lord’s Conference – September 23-25.  This conference will increase awareness of why Christians ought to care for creation.  Through worship, wonder, eating, and advocacy we seek to live into the Psalmist’s call in Psalm 24:  “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it.”  Cost of workshop is $95 if registered by Sept. 3 and $110 for registration after Sept. 3.  See the Caring for Creation bulletin board for more information or go online to westernsem.edu/journey or call 392-8555.

Women’s Service Day 2010 – September 30:  Want to help agencies serving women and children in our community, learn more about the needs around us, and network with women you might not otherwise meet?  Participate in Women’s Service Day on Sept. 30.  From 8:15 a.m. until mid-afternoon, you can be part of a breakfast, silent auction and raffle, and a four- hour work session as part of a crew of women serving a local agency.  Interested?  If you’re a woman 18 or older, email the planning team at womensserviceday@gmail.com, read more at womensvolunteerday.blogspot.com, or contact Lois Maassen.  Capacity is limited and volunteers first-registered are also first-to-serve!

JustFaith – If you are looking for ways to be the hands and feet of Christ to “the least among us,” then check out the JustFaith program.  JustFaith has been offered at nearby St. Francis Catholic Church for eight years and has graduated 101 parishioners from the program.  This year, the ecumenical version of the program is being co-facilitated by Jeannette Brownson of New Community/4th, and Aimee VandenElzen, a member of St. Francis.  Several churches in Holland are being invited to participate, among them: New Community/Fourth Reformed, Third Reformed, Maple Avenue Ministries, Hope Church, and First United Methodist.  Our hope and prayer is that this will be a unique and rewarding opportunity for the body of Christ to come together in partnership to reach our neighborhood in tangible ways with Christ’s love.  Will you join us?  You can find details about the JustFaith program at http://www.justfaith.org

Advent ReflectionsHope Church is planning to produce another issue of Advent Reflections for 2010. This consists of daily readings based on the lectionary and written by members of our Hope Church family. If, in response to a phone call, you say, "Yes, I can do that!" it will be a blessing to you as well as to our readers.  A sign-up sheet will be available in September.

Health Tip:  Don’t use hydrogen peroxide for cleaning wounds.  It is no more effective than soap and water (the preferred method), and may actually damage the surrounding healthy skin.

Connect with volunteer opportunities online:  Ideas Ministry is experimenting with a blog to communicate about opportunities for members to get involved in our church and community. Check it out at: lifeofhopechurch.wordpress.com  The “In the Church” and “In the Community” tabs will grow, with your help, into comprehensive lists of ongoing opportunities to engage.  The home page will be used to communicate new additions or time-sensitive events to volunteer for, attend, support, or include in your prayers.  You can subscribe to receive e-mail copies of those posts on the right-hand side of the page.  You can drop paper comments or suggestions into the Ideas Box in the Gathering Area, or use the “Contact Us” tab on the website to send an e-mail.
