washington school neighborsGeese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here.
-Wendell Berry

“What we need is here.” This is the philosophy that undergirds assetbased community development. This is the same faith that holds us to believe that a flourishing neighborhood isn’t about bringing in a ton of resources. It’s about unfolding our gifts, and daring to share.

In this season of geese, lets pray as Berry suggests, “to be quiet in heart, and in eye, clear.” Attentive, listening, so that we can see the people around us, and their gifts, and know how to appreciate and participate.
