Rhonda Edgington will be playing her annual Advent organ recital this year on Sunday, December 14 at 4:15 pm. As in previous years, this will be a collection of Advent themed hymns for congregational singing, as well as pieces based on those hymns, and centered around themes of Advent and Christmas.
This year, Rhonda will be performing an exciting work of the French early 20th century by Marcel Dupre, The World Awaiting the Savior, from his Passion Symphony, whose driving rhythms and complex chords (almost jazzy in sound) make this piece a favorite of Rhonda’s. She will also be playing a work by Hugo Distler, a German writing during WWII era, whose music is influenced by the Baroque, as well as jazz and popular music. And there will also be music by Bach!
John Hoyer, former choir director at Hope Church, and retired music librarian at Hope College, will also be participating in the recital, singing Baroque and Renaissance settings of chants and hymns on which the organ pieces Rhonda will play are based.
Hope to see you then!
