An Organ Concert for the Young, and Young-at-Heart
Rhonda Sider Edgington, organist at Hope Church, will be presenting “Animals in Music” on Sunday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. at Hope Church. The concert will be geared towards children, but with plenty of interest for adults as well.
On the program is a transcription of the orchestra piece, “Peter and the Wolf,” by Prokofiev, featuring Herrick District Library’s well-loved children’s librarian, Eileen Jenkins, as narrator. Also on the program is “Animal Ditties” for organ and trumpet by Anthony Plog featuring poems by Ogden Nash. Grand Rapids Symphony and West Shore Symphony trumpeter, Jimmy Leach, will perform in this piece.
“Animals in Music” will also include selections from the set, “Animal Parade”, written in 2007 by British composer Iain Farrington, who writes in a virtuosic, jazz-influenced style. The concert will conclude with a rousing sing-along rendition of the children’s song, “The Wheels on the Bus”, with a newly written text for the occasion: “The Pipes on the Organ Go Toot-Toot-Toot.”
As has become a tradition for Rhonda’s organ concerts at Hope Church, there will be a camera on the organ console and a large screen at the front of the sanctuary to enable the audience to better see Rhonda’s hands and feet as she plays, as well as the many complexities of how the organ works. Rhonda will also offer some brief spoken descriptions about the organ and the music being played. Admission is free, all are welcome!
