Hope Church Friends,

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has issued an urgent call to action. Any further unchecked emissions of greenhouse gases will lead to irreparable global harm.  We need to begin a rapid and deep cut in our use of fossil fuels. Time is short. The IPCC suggests that what we do, or don’t do, in the next ten years will be consequential.

The Creation Care Ministry believes that people of faith need to do their part.  There are individual changes which we each can make. We’ll talk more about them later. But for now, the most important task is to set effective national policy in motion.  We need some “rules of the road” to shape our national response and guide our individual choices.

This is not a moment for despair.  We have all the tools, technologies, and resources we need to meet this challenge. At the moment, we lack only the political will to act.  The Ministry believes that it is imperative that we each contact our congressional representatives and ask them to act.

The Ministry has endorsed the Monthly Calling Campaign sponsored by Citizens’ Climate Lobby as being an effective means to express our concern. The Campaign is simple to use and needs only minutes each month in order to participate. The national campaign, when successful, will produce a daily stream of climate action messages to every congressional office.

The Campaign works this way:

  • Click on the email signup link, https://citizensclimatelobby.org/monthly-calling-campaign/
  • Fill in your contact information
  • Choose either a text or email prompt
  • The program assigns you one day each month
  • The program sends a prompt with your representative’s phone number(s)
  • The program supplies a short script if you want it
  • You respectfully express your climate concern
  • You click the “I Called” button when finished

This kind of action will be new for many of us.  But it isn’t difficult. Your voice matters, but only if you use it. As people of faith, we know that, no matter how impossible it may seem to be,  change is possible. If you have questions or need help, contact Peter Boogaart at pboogaart@hotmail.com.
