On November 4 at 9:40 a.m., Wesley Granberg-Michaelson, who was General Secretary of the RCA from 1994 to 2011, will share some insights from his life story, Unexpected Destinations: An Evangelical Pilgrimage to World Christianity (Eerdmans 2011). He’ll describe how his decision to attend Hope College rather than Wheaton took him to some unexpected destinations, and he’ll share some of his reflections from his ministry within the denomination and around the world.
Due to Hurricane Sandy this week on the eastern coast of the United States, our scheduled Sunday morning guest for the Adult Education Class, Wes Granberg-Michaelson, is not able to be with us. Rev. Jeff Japinga, Associate Dean and Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago has agreed to substitute. Jeff will present conversational themes similar to what Wes was going to bring to us: current RCA ecumenical involvement; what’s coming in the future around dialogue with the E.L.C.A.; and the use of the Bible in making moral decisions. Jeff is currently the chairperson and moderator of the RCA’s Commission on Christian Unity, the standing committee that oversees all of the ecumenical efforts of the RCA. (Thanks, Jeff, for filling in on Sunday !)
On November 11 at 9:40 a.m., Tom DeVries, the newly installed General Secretary of the RCA, will tell us about his hopes and dreams for the future of the denomination. Given outcomes from General Synod 2012, where does he see the denomination going? Will the glue that has held the denomination together continue to hold?
