Hope Church member, Peter Boogaart, received the Outstanding Earth Steward Award from Michigan Interfaith Power and Light last week for his passion for the Earth and dedication to combating environmental issues. Peter has been the coordinator for the Caring for Creation task force, a faith based environmental group, for ten years.
The WMEAC blog reports,
Under Boogaart’s leadership, the group has organized wildflower walks, kayaking trips and winter walks. They have also done battery recycling, built a rain garden on church property and had an energy audit done on the building. Working with Creation Care led the development of a wider network of partner churches called West Michigan Creation Care where more support could be given to their ideas and goals. For the past five years, the group has partnered with Comprenew in Grand Rapids, Herman-Miller and Hayworth to recycle old electronics like TVs and computers. Boogaart expects that by the end of 2013, they will have recycled over 300,000 pounds of old electronics. Boogaart was honored at the Michigan Interfaith Power and Light 10th Anniversary Awards Dinner on March 7 at First Unitarian Universalist Church in Ann Arbor.
