Although the end of summer may feel as though it is the end of your garden, it is actually one of the best seasons for your pollinator plants. As flowers go to seed, they provide food for birds and small animals in the fall and winter. Many seeds need a cold season for blooms in the spring, and planting rooted perennials at this time of year allows them to settle into the ground, creating stronger plants for the next season. Native plants are the best choice for your pollinator garden, as they allow our naturally occurring pollinators to thrive. Native plants are also essential for creating healthy waterways, and their deep root systems stabilize our unique duneland soil.

Locally, there are two upcoming native plant sales:

The morning of September 19, Holland BPW will host their Fall Native Plant Sale featuring many local growers.

The Ottawa Conservation District is offering pre-orders for dune grass and garden kits (a great option for those beginning their pollinator gardens) through August 28, while their “browse-n-buy” native plant sale on September 26 is excellent for those who prefer to pick and choose their garden selection.
